Heartbreak to Hope Walk 2025

Support my challenge for kids facing cancer.

Every month in Australia, 90 children are diagnosed with cancer. 

For those families, their lives are changed forever. Cancer puts families under enormous pressure. It can feel like it’s impossible to hold it together.

This May, I am taking part in the Heartbreak to Hope Walk to raise funds for Redkite to provide emotional, financial and practical support and care to families facing childhood cancer.

Together, we can show these children and their families that they don't have to face cancer alone and support them as they face the toughest time of their lives.

Hi, my name is Bec, and this is something close to my heart. Life has a way of shifting the ground beneath your feet when you least expect it.

In Jan 2023, our world changed. My son, Rafael, was diagnosed with clear cell sarcoma of his right kidney. At the time, we were like so many other families — going through the routines of school, work, family dinners, and birthday parties. Cancer was something that happened to “other people,” not to kids, and certainly not to my own.

But it did.  We spent 11 months in Brisbane, where Raffy received treatment at the Queensland Children’s Hospital. Life as we knew it changed, what followed was something we never expected — an outpouring of kindness and support from people around us, and even from those we had never met.

Family, friends, and our local community were there every step of the way. Whether it was meals dropped off at our door, messages of encouragement, or simply showing up when we needed them most — every act of love reminded us that we were not alone in this fight.

We were also incredibly fortunate to receive help from organizations like Redkite, Childhood Cancer Support, Camp Quality and many more. The compassion and dedication of these organizations were a light in some of darkest moments. 

This challenge is not just an opportunity to help raise funds, but to shine a light on the power of community.  Because this kind of support made an overwhelming journey feel a little more bearable.

To other families who find themselves in these unimaginable situations, who are in the thick of treatment, or who are feeling overwhelmed and afraid - please hold on. You are not alone. I hope you can draw strength, love and light from those around you. There is hope, even on the darkest days. Lean on your support systems, accept help when it’s offered, and take each day one step at a time.

I am incredibly grateful to share that Raffy is good and well. He is 4 years old, and like most other boys, loves Spiderman!
